The Next Unit of Computing

Engadget has an interesting review of one of Intel’s new barebone systems, the NUC. This is interesting… as the price of systems continues to drop, little systems like this embedded or attached to cars, conference rooms and tv sets will become more common.

There is a whole generation of software that needs to be written to take advantage of all of these sorts of systems – in addition to a remote, centralized cloud, we may see the rise of a localized computing fog. While it may not match the raw computing power of the cloud, it would have advantages of lower latency and perhaps (coupled with sensors like Kinect) location, spatial and (most importantly) context awareness.
